Charlie Flohr

Charlie Flohr, a coaching veteran of 20 years, was appointed the 37th head football coach at South Dakota Mines on December 16, 2019. Flohr has a head coaching record of 20-17 in his four years with the Hardrockers.

In four years under Flohr’s direction, the Hardrocker football program has made tremendous strides, and currently sits with one of the highest winning percentage among coaches in school history.

  • Flohr’s teams at SDM have defeated chief rival Black Hills State on the road twice, something that hadn’t been done in over a decade, and won the homestake trophy (given to the victor in the Black Hills Brawl between South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State) in back-to-back season and three times in his four seasons.
  • Flohr spent 14 seasons at Northwest State University, becoming one of the most respected offensive minds in Division II football.
  • During his tenure of leading their offense, Northwest Missouri State captured three national titles, and captured at least a share of the MIAA conference title six times.
  • In his time leading the charge offensively, Northwest Missouri State competed in the NCAA Tournament each of his 7 seasons, with an overall record of 86-9 and a conference record of 70-6.
  • Overall, in his 14 years at Northwest Missouri State, the Bearcats won a share or outright MIAA championship 11 times, won four NCAA championships, appeared in seven national championship games, qualified for the NCAA tournament each season and went 134-11 in conference play.
  • In 2016, Charlie Flohr was named the FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year.
HARDROCKERS ON THE FIELD

2023 Season
  • The Hardrockers defeated Black Hills State University to capture the Homestake Trophy for the third time in four years and the second straight time in Spearfish.
  • Ben Noland had one of the best seasons in school history for a wide receiver, becoming a Harlon Hill nominee and becoming the first Hardrocker to be named to the Division II AP All-America Team as he earned a spot on the second team.
  • Noland and Henry Dryden were named to the D2CCA All-Super Region 4 team.
  • The Hardrockers had 10 players earn RMAC postseason honors with Noland, Dryden and Connor Smith being named to first team offense, while Jayden Johannsen and Grant Smith earned second team offense. Five Hardrockers earned honorable mention.
  • Two players were named RMAC Offensive Players of the Week with Jayden Johannsen and Ben Noland earning the honor. For Johannsen, it was his fifth time earning the honor in his career.
  • South Dakota Mines ranked near the top of NCAA Division II in several categories, including but not limited to: 3rd down conversion percentage (50.7%, 7th), defensive 4th down conversion percentage (23.5%, 9), completion percentage (64.6%, 16th), fewest penalties per game (15th, 4.82), passing offense per game (253.5, 19th) and redzone offense (92.5%, 4th).
  • Noland finished the season ranked 3rd in receptions (92), 7th in receiving yards (1,184), 4th in receiving yards per game (107.6), 6th in receiving touchdowns (15), (27th in all-purpose yards per game (121.09), 18th in punt return average (9.7), 31st in scoring (92 points) and 22nd in total touchdowns (15).
  • Noland set school records for receiving touchdowns in a season with 15 and for catches in a single-game with 16 against Colorado School of Mines.
  • Johannsen was once again near the top of NCAA Division II in many categories. He was 17th in completion percentage (65.3%), 13th in completions per game (21.18), 13th in passing touchdowns (29), 12th in points responsible for (212), 8th in points responsible for per game (19.3) and 21st in total offense per game (265.3).
  • Hunter Newsom finished the season with 9 tackles per game, 20th at the NCAA Division II level.
2022 Season
  • South Dakota Mines went 7-4 to post their first back-to-back winning seasons since 1985-86.
  • The Hardrockers went 6-3 in conference play for third place, their best record and highest finish ever in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference history.
  • Jayden Johannsen was one of the best quarterbacks in the country, earning a Harlon Hill nomination.
  • Jeremiah Bridges was named to the Don Hansen All-America team as an honorable mention.
  • Johannsen was named the National Offensive Player of the Week by D2Football.com for Sept. 7.
  • The Hardrockers had 10 players earn RMAC postseason honors with Gavin Chaddock and Kyante Chrisian being named RMAC All-Conference First Team Defense and Bridges being named First Team Offense. Johannsen and Eastman were named second team offense and five others earned honorable mention.
  • Three different players earned RMAC Player of the Week with Jayden Johannsen, Isaiah Eastman and Jeremiah Bridges all winning the award. Johannsen won three of the awards throughout the season, a new school record.
  • As a team, South Dakota Mines was 15th in the country in fewest penalties (52).
  • Offensively, the Hardrockers had a great year, ranking 5th in passing offense (315.5), 20th in first downs (263), 22nd in passing efficiency (148.58) and 14th in total offense (442.6).
  • Jeremiah Bridges and Isaiah Eastman were a phenomenal 1-2 combo at wide receiver with each recording over 1,100 receiving yards on the season.
  • Nationally, Bridges ranked 8th in receiving yards (1,238), 6th in receiving yards per game (112.5), 8th in receptions (79) and 11th in receiving touchdowns.
  • Eastman ranked 11th in receiving yards per game, 13th in receiving yards, 5th in receptions (86), 14th in punt return average (12.3) and returned a punt for a touchdown.
  • Johannsen emerged as one of the best quarterbacks not only in the RMAC, but in the country, ranking 23rd in completion percentage (63.2%), 8th in completions per game (22.64), 18th in passing efficiency (151.3), 12th in passing touchdowns (28), 8th in passing yards (3,199) and passing yards per game (290.8), 9th in points responsible for (216) and 3rd in total offense per game (338.2).
2021 Season
  • South Dakota Mines went 6-5 to post their first winning season since 2015.
  • The victory over Black Hills State claimed the Homestake Trophy for back-to-back years for the first time since 2015-16.
  • In defeating Black Hills State, the win in Spearfish was the first road victory in the series for South Dakota Mines Since 2004.
  • Four different players earned RMAC Player of the Week with Christian Singleton, Kyante Christian, Jayden Johannsen and Isaiah Eastman all winning the award.
  • The Hardrockers had 16 players earn RMAC postseason honors with Christian and Gavin Chaddock being named RMAC First Team All Defense and Eastman being named Second Team Special Teams. 13 others were named honorable mention.
2020 Season
  • South Dakota Mines went 6-5 to post their first winning season since 2015.
  • In the shortened covid-19 season, the Hardrockers were able to play four games, finishing with a 2-2 record.
  • Ahmad Lewis (2x), Isaiah Eastman, Dominick Jackson, Casey Knutsen (2x) all earned RMAC Player of the Week honors in the abbreviated season.
  • Lewis finished 9th in NCAA Division II rushing yards.
  • As a team, defensively the Hardrockers were 23rd at the Division II level in total defense.
HARDROCKERS IN THE CLASSROOM
  • In 2023, four Hardrockers were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.
  • Four players earned RMAC All-Academic First team in 2023, while 21 student-athletes earned honorable mention.
  • Following the fall of 2023, the football team had a combined GPA of over 3 for the first time in Flohr’s tenure.
  • 15 student-athletes earn RMAC All-Academic honors in 2022, including four named to the first team.
  • In 2021, 14 student-athletes earned RMAC All-Academic honors with two named to the first team.
RISING UP THE RANKS
  • Flohr began his coaching career as a graduate assistant, coaching the tight ends and as a recruiting coordinator with Northwest Missouri State University (2002-03)
  • The first full-time position in coaching came with Truman State University, where he was charged with coaching the wide receivers as well as recruiting for a two-year stint from 2004-05.
  • From there he spent the next 14 years building up the dynasty at Northwest Missouri State University, starting as wide receiver/recruiting coordinator (2006-08), before moving onto quarterbacks (2008-2012).
  • In 2012, as quarterback coach, Flohr’s offensive units led the MIAA and were ranked fifth nationally with a scoring average of 41.92 points per game. This was a follow up to the Bearcat’s record-setting offensive unit in 2011 that averaged more than 50 points per game during the regular season and shared the lead in total offense most of the season before finishing fourth at 495.07 yards per game. The MIAA leader in passing efficiency, Trevor Adams also finished ranked 11th in NCAA Division II as Northwest set the school record for points scored in a season with 681. The 681 points was also the second most in college football regardless of division and was surpassed only by NCAA Division I Houston.
  • In his first year as offensive coordinator at Northwest in 2013, Flohr worked with senior quarterback Trevor Adams in 2013 during the Bearcats’ national championship run. Adams finished as the nation’s leader in passing efficiency and set career highs in passing yards with 3,065 and touchdowns (30).
  • In 2014, the Bearcat offense finished the season ranked in the nation’s top-25 in four categories. Northwest averaged 34:07 in time of posession, ranking sixth nationally. The Bearcats also finished 12th in first downs (299), 14th in third down conversion percentage (47.9%) and 19th in rushing offense (229.4). Eight Northwest offensive players earned All-MIAA honors.
  • Northwest's 2015 national championship campaign featured an offense that ranked in top-five of 12 MIAA offensive categories. The team's 334 total first downs ranked second in the NCAA and the offense's 92.5 red zone scoring percentage was fourth nationally. Three Bearcats earned first-team All-MIAA accolades led by quarterback Brady Bolles who became the program's all-time leader in total offense (9,296) and pass attempts (1,011). Northwest's 41.4 points per game topped the MIAA and was the 10th highest average in the nation.
  • In 2016, Kyle Zimmerman, a fifth-year quarterback finished second in the Harlon Hill voting, throwing for 3,763 yards and 37 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He was the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and earned multiple All-America accolades. Northwest boasted the nation's top-ranked red zone offense at 96.2 percent. The 45.5 points per game ranked fifth nationally and the Bearcats were 12th in the NCAA with a 48.8 third down conversion percentage.
  • Adding the title of Assistant Head Coach in 2017, Flohr saw wide receiver/returner Shawn Bane Jr., earn second team All-MIAA honors. Bane Jr. caught 51 passes for 675 yards and six touchdowns. Bane Jr. tallied a team-best 913 all-purpose yards.
  • Quarterback Braden Wright captured MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2018. Wright passed for 2,596 yards and 24 touchdowns. Wright also rushed for 514 yards and 11 touchdowns. Wright ranked No. 1 in the nation in points responsible for among freshmen with 210 points. Wright's 11 rushing touchdowns ranked as the top number among freshmen quarterbacks in all of Division II football.
  • In his final year at Northwest Missouri State in 2019, the Bearcat offense averaged 43.3 points per game, 9th in NCAA Division II.
PLAYING CAREER
  • Flohr was a four-year letterwinner at Dakota State University.
  • He was honored as a two-time All-DAC Honorable Mention selection as a wide receiver.
  • At the end of his career, Flohr was the schools’ all-time leader in punt returns.
PERSONAL
  • Flohr graduated from Dakota State University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in health and physical education and went on to earn a master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2003.
  • Flohr is married to his wife, Amy and has three sons, Adam, Austin, and Alec.
