CHANDLER, Ariz. --- The South Dakota Mines golf teams opened play as the men and women completed a majority of their first rounds before a suspension due to lack of light.
Â
The men hung around near the middle of the pack for most of the round, getting all the golfers through 16 holes, with a +15 before play was suspended.
Roger Nakagawa led the squad, shooting an even-par after getting through the round with three birdies, three bogeys, and 12 pars to sit in the top-10 overall.
Bryce Howard and
Joseph Vincent got through 17 and all 18, shooting +4.
Jake Francis and
Lane Jensen rounded out the men's teams, getting through the round at 7-over and 9-over.
Â
As a team, the men are sitting at +15 to sit in ninth place but are within striking distance of Colorado Mesa and the Colorado School of Mines for a potential move up the board in round 2.
Â
On the women's side of things, they started fast, sitting in 3rd overall through 8 holes, with three women in the top-10 with
Rianna Garland,
Annika Schooler, and
Mya Maxwell swinging hot sticks. Unfortunately, the 9th hole would see Maxwell card a 12 which would slow some of the momentum. Garland kept up her strong play throughout, shooting +2 to sit in a tie for 5th. Garland carded 1 birdie, 3 bogeys, and 14 pars on the day.
Annika Schooler,
Mya Maxwell, and
Jessalyn Shipp all finished their rounds and are +11, +19, and +23.
Julia Sabetti has two holes left to play and is currently +15.
Â
The first round will finish for
Bryce Howard and
Julia Sabetti at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, while the second round will tee off for both teams starting at 2:39 p.m. MT.
