“Shannon was a national champion in the high hurdles, indoors and outdoors, as a competitor (at SD Mines) and also understands the rigors of our academics. Her experiences provide her with unique insights into what it takes to be successful at SD Mines,” Johnson said.
Reed began coaching in January 2011 at Douglas High School where she was the Assistant Volleyball Coach. There she developed and implemented practice plans, organized training and practice schedules, and collaborated with other coaching staff to develop practice plans.
January 2011 is also when she began coaching track and field as an assistant, also at Douglas. Reed’s duties included developing a training program for high and intermediate hurdles along with high jump.
Reed has been a volunteer track and field coach for SD Mines since September 2016. Her responsibilities for the Hardrockers were to develop and implement a training program for high and intermediate hurdles, while also assisting with the sprinters.
“We’re very excited to bring Coach Reed onto the staff full-time. She’s done a tremendous job working with our sprinters and hurdlers over the last couple of years and know she will continue to do great things with those groups,” Johnson added.
Reed was a highly decorated high school hurdler at Douglas High School winning six South Dakota State Championships (four state championships in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and two state championships in the 100-meter high hurdles).
Reed began her collegiate career as a Hardrocker earning four All-American Honors -- winning two NAIA National Championships in the 100 high hurdles and setting seven SD Mines school records in the hurdle and sprint events.Shannon went on to finish her career at Black Hills State, earning three more national titles in the high hurdles and five more All-American honors in the high hurdles, pentathlon and heptathlon.
